Internships
During their own time at college and university, Emma Sewell and Harriet Wallace-Jones appreciated the support and opportunities that were provided by industry figures, and as such have always included teaching and mentorship alongside their own practice and building a business. Having lectured at institutions such as the Royal College of Art, Chelsea College of Art, and Nottingham Trent throughout their careers, they understand that the transition from a degree to a professional studio is a pivotal moment for any designer. Wallace Sewell is dedicated to bridging this gap by offering structured, paid internships that provide meaningful industry experience.
The studio believes that the future of British weaving depends on fair access. By ensuring all internships are paid, we hope to remove one of the biggest barriers to gaining work experience. This investment in new talent is woven into the very fabric of the company; in fact, many of the current permanent team members first joined the studio as interns. For Emma and Harriet, these placements are not just temporary roles, but a vital way to nurture the technical skills and creative energy that will define the next generation of textile design.
Production Assistant
Lancashire
We have a workroom up in Lancashire where we cut, label, quality check, pack and dispatch our products worldwide. The workroom is located in the same mill that our fabrics are woven, so it would be a great opportunity for you to see and work in an industrial modern mill, and see fabrics being woven at a large scale. Tasks would include:
- Processing fabric rolls as they return from the finishers.
- Cutting scarves and throws with precision.
- Attentively quality checking products for faults.
- Sewing/Labelling and tagging products.
- Packing orders to be dispatched internationally.

Renovated in 2024, Wallace Sewell took over the top floor of the historic County Brook Mill.
County Brook Mill is perfectly situated in a historic textile area with finishers nearby. We can weave, quality check and finish fabric all within a 25-mile radius. Once the fabric is returned to the mill, our team hand cut, sew, process, check and pack almost all of our products on site.
The dedicated Wallace Sewell mill team started working out of a space on the ground floor in around 2014 but as production has increased over the years, we outgrew our space! At the same time, it became obvious that we could streamline our online order service by sending all packages from the point of production, rather than from London, so when the opportunity of a new, bigger space arose, we took it.
The mill workroom plays a vital part in the Wallace Sewell story - not only as the hub where all our scarves, throws and cushions are cut, sewn and finished, but also in our Internship Programme. Over the years, the workroom has welcomed students from HE courses, and provided practical experience and knowledge to many graduates and interns. Several interns have gone on to become permanent members of staff, and we are proud that our working culture includes the nurture of talent.
