DesignTex - Upholstery
Wallace Sewell fans will know that, in addition to producing our own retail collections, we also collaborate with like-minded brands as guest designers, bringing our expertise and passion for colour to various collections. Since 2014, we have worked with Designtex, a New York-based company that designs and manufactures applied materials for the built environment.
For over sixty years, Designtex has been driven by a commitment to improving how materials integrate into daily life, enhancing the human experience, and solving problems through thoughtful design. As an innovative and forward-thinking studio, they offered an opportunity we were excited to embrace, starting with an initial upholstery fabric collection. This partnership evolved into a long-lasting and dynamic collaboration, with Wallace Sewell serving as guest designers for six distinctive ranges—from oversized checks and bold stripes to more subtle and playful patterns. Our unique approach to colour, combined with Designtex’s expertise in fabric construction and performance, pushed the boundaries of what is possible in upholstery textiles.
For the first collection, Wallace Sewell revisited Harriet’s Royal College of Art designs, featuring oversized, asymmetric checks, reimagining them for interior fabrics. Other collections included velvet designs and a complex checkerboard of stripes and blocks. The most recent collection was River Lea and The Thames. They are offered in intentionally coordinated colourways so you can easily co-ordinate and mix across the two designs.
The second collection was the Finsbury collection, velvets inspired by the work they have done for TFL.
The third collection was Cubitt.
The fourth, and most recent, collection was River Lea and The Thames.
River Lea is a fine, pinstripe while The Thames is composed of bolder and thicker stripes. They are offered in intentionally coordinated colourways so you can easily co-ordinate and mix across the two designs.
The Wallace Sewell design team took inspiration from the natural world around them, defining colour palettes with watercolour paintings. Many, many yarn windings were produced, exploring the balance and weight of stripes!
Suitable for all types of upholstery projects, these fabrics are high-performance, hard-wearing and beautiful to touch.
