Happy Birthday, Gunta Stölzl

Happy Birthday, Gunta Stölzl

Wednesday 5th March, would have been the birthday of German textile artist Gunta Stölzl. To mark this special occasion and pay homage to her legacy, we have paired up with Modernist Estates.

Many of you will be familiar with the story of our Re-Edition Bauhaus throws - painstakingly recreated from photographs and archived sketches after all known original Prellerdecke blankets, designed by Gunta Stölzl, were lost.

If not, you can read the full, fascinating story of the blankets and how Emma and Harriet became design sleuths here: The Gunta Stölzl Bauhaus Project and The Bauhaus Project

The Wallace Sewell Prellerdecke blanket harks back to the original as closely as possible, picking up on the rhythm and simplicity of Gunta’s design. We were given license to create four new modern colourways, which keep the tonal balance and design that's essentially Bauhaus, whilst updating to a more contemporary palette.

Our Re-Edition Bauhaus blankets will honestly look good in any interior, but we have teamed up with Stefi Orazi, from Modernist Estates to style the Indigo throw in her stunning twentieth-century home.

Stefi Orazi is the founder of Modernist Estates, established in 2013 as a platform dedicated to paying tribute the design and legacy of twentieth-century housing. What began as a blog focused on modernist housing estates quickly gained a dedicated following. Through architectural history, site visits, and interviews with residents, Stefi shared the stories behind these iconic buildings, leading to her first book, Modernist Estates: The Buildings and the People Who Live in Them Today.

Stefi is also the author of several other acclaimed books, including The Barbican Estate, and Modernist Escapes, and the creator of Perambulations, a fantastic series of walking guides that explore architectural sites in London, the UK and internationally.

Having established herself as an expert in modernist buildings, Stefi was frequently asked if the houses she featured were available to live in, so her latest venture is a not-for-profit estate agency, highlighting modernist homes for sale, rent and holiday stays.

Her own home is a stylish tribute to modernist design, as you can see in these beautiful photos. Our 'Indigo' Bauhaus Re-Edition throw complements the space perfectly, adding both warmth and a dynamic touch of pattern to the sofa.
