Bauhaus Centenary - Gunta Stölzl Collection
In 2019, as part of the Bauhaus centenary celebrations, Wallace Sewell re-issued Gunta Stölzl’s original ‘Prellerdecke’ blanket. This project, initiated by Jörg Klambt of Designshop at Bauhaus Dessau, recreated the lost design with help from Stölzl’s daughter, Monika Stadler, and archive drawings and photographs.
Stölzl, fundamental to the Bauhaus weaving department, originally designed the blanket for the ‘Prellerhaus’ student dormitories in Dessau. The design featured a bold interaction of horizontal and vertical, positive and negative elements.
Emma and Harriet meticulously analysed a photograph of the original blanket and developed designs by hand on small looms before weaving full-scale pieces in Lancashire. The new Prellerhaus blanket closely mirrors the original, capturing Stölzl’s design rhythm and simplicity. Wallace Sewell added four new colour ways, preserving the Bauhaus essence and updating it with a contemporary palette.
