The Standard Hotel - Bespoke Bedspreads
The Standard opened its first UK hotel in Kings Cross, London, in July 2019. This marked the sixth location in the Standard chain, which includes properties in New York's Meatpacking District and East Village, Miami Beach, downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and the Maldives, all featuring interiors designed by Shaun Hausman Design. For the London hotel, the team embraced a bolder colour scheme than in previous locations, and Wallace Sewell was excited to design the bedspreads that would adorn each room.
This bespoke commission was a thrilling opportunity as The Standard is known for its modern and stylish interior design. The Kings Cross hotel boasts rich geometric details and a 1970s influence, creating a fun, bold, and playful atmosphere with a sophisticated and unique aesthetic. Hausman noted inspiration drawn from a range of films, including Fahrenheit 451, Silent Running, and Logan’s Run, alongside the iconic aesthetics of the London Underground and mid-century Italian design.
The collaboration began at the New York Now trade show, where the Hausman team presented a clear and defined brief that perfectly aligned with Wallace Sewell’s approach. The design evolved from paper sketches to small hand-woven mock-ups to finalise proportions of the large-scale design featuring bold areas of colour, reminiscent of a modernist abstract painting. The palette centred on pure reds and blues, accented with violet and mint green, to anchor the overall composition.
The resulting blankets were made to the same specifications as Wallace Sewell's Lambswool Block throws, woven from sumptuous merino lambswool and lightly felted for a super soft, inviting quality with a fluid drape.
